Newcomers - What To Expect

What to Expect When You Visit

Spirit
Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Church is a caring, open-minded church that encourages each individual to seek his/her own spiritual path. Our faith draws on many religious sources, welcoming people with different beliefs. We are united by shared values , not by creed or dogma. In this place, people gather to nurture their spirits and put their faith into action by helping to make our community—and the world—a better place.

Unitarian Universalism is a theologically diverse religion, in which members support one another in the search for truth and meaning and are committed not only to spiritual growth and transformation but also to involvement in the world.*

Open Hearts, Open Minds”
Northwoods is a Welcoming Congregation that truly believes in and, more importantly, practices this motto. We respect different beliefs and also different social relationships, including those of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people. We are an inclusive community.

Our Sunday Service
If you’ve attend UU services before, you will find many familiar elements in the Northwoods services. If not, some of the worship will be new to you. You might want to take a walk through a “typical” Sunday and have a look at a “typical” Order of Worship.

Dress
You will find Northwoods to be fairly casual, with a range of clothing at Sunday services from jeans to traditional “church clothes.” The minister wears a robe and stole.

Culture
During the Sunday services, the congregation comes together for contemplation, spiritual affirmation, and celebration through sermons, stories, philosophical readings, insightful poems, and a wide range of vibrant music.

There are also many social, educational and spiritual activities going on throughout the year, as well as a variety of groups and ministries that engage the mind, body and spirit.

This wealth of people and activities, taken together, defines the Northwoods culture. People are welcome to get involved as quickly or gradually as suits their needs and time.
