Our History

A few Unitarians attempted to bring together like-minded individuals in the North Houston area in 1973.  Monthly pot-luck dinners were held in members' homes on the north side of Houston.  Thirty nine people became charter members and chose the name Northwoods Unitarian Society of Greater Houston.  The Society was accepted as a member Society of the UUA at the General Assembly on June 18, 1978.   In 1980, Northwoods arranged to restore an abandoned house on Kuykendahl Road in exchange for rent-free meeting space.  When the work was done Northwoods moved into the partially refurbished building.  The recital room in the back was used for the sanctuary, and the attic served as the Religious Education room.  The Society arranged to rent space in the Ponderosa YMCA on Ella Boulevard at 1960, and moved into the new facilities in September 1983.  Northwoods' success continued and within three months membership doubled.  The Society purchased land in the Woodlands and built the current building in the summer of 1985.   In June, 2008 the congregation celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Society.

Northwoods has had many reasons to celebrate its 30th Anniversary, but perhaps the most important reason was that a steady stream of caring, questioning individuals of diverse religious upbringing have nurtured a liberal religious family and have proved a dynamic, stalwart social force within The Woodlands community.  Northwoods is a wonderful Unitarian Universalist Church open to all who need a liberal religious home.  The future of Northwoods now lies before us, and that future looks very bright indeed!
